Dr. V. Abdur Rahim ﵀ (d. 1445 AH / 2023 CE)

The historic region of small-town Tamil Nadu, India, was the cradle for Dr. V. Abdur Rahim﵀, who represents the extraordinary manifestation of ‘Ajami linguistic genius. His lifelong pursuit of knowledge was a cross-continental journey that combined Eastern and Western educational methodologies; he earned a BA in English from the University of Madras, followed by an MA and a PhD in Arabic Philology from Aligarh Muslim University. He spent the pinnacle of his career as a premier professor at the Islamic University of Madinah, working alongside senior figures such as Abdul Aziz bin Baz. Dr. Abdur Rahim entered the global academic landscape at a critical historical juncture, noticing that thousands of sincere Muslims coming from the West to study the deen were facing an impenetrable wall: the classical Arabic language.

Governed by absolute taqwa and a profound sense of accountability before Allah, he realized that traditional Arabic textbooks were built around dry, archaic formulas that caused high failure rates among non-Arabs. To solve this systemic pedagogical crisis, he dedicated his vast philological expertise to a complete revolution in how grammar is taught. Over years of intense analysis, he designed an entirely new, highly intuitive contextual system that teaches complex grammatical rules (Nahw) and word morphology (Sarf) naturally through integrated reading exercises. Moving away from repetitive rote-learning, his method allowed independent home-learners to translate real classical sentences within their very first month. For this unparalleled service, he was also appointed as the Director of the Translation Centre at the King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex, ensuring the linguistic precision of global texts while authoring technical references like A Glossary of Words Used in the King Fahd Complex Quran Translation and his collection Arba‘una Hadithan.

True to the principle that scholars are the rightful inheritors of the prophets, his ultimate sacrifices were borne in his tireless devotion to building a borderless classroom within the sacred walls of the Prophet’s ﵆ Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) in Madinah. For nearly three decades, he chose a life of constant service over personal ease, running public, open-access circles for students who had travelled from Europe, the Americas, Africa, and East Asia.

When he passed away in 1445 AH (2023), his loss was felt by millions of students across the globe. He left behind an organized, universally accessible linguistic blueprint that continues to empower schools across every continent. Today, UKIA carries his legacy forward by offering his internationally celebrated masterwork, the Durus al-Lughah al-Arabiyyah li-Ghair al-Natiqina biha series, popularly known in English as the Arabic Course for English Speaking Students.
