ʿUrwah ibn Zubayr ﵀ (d. 94 AH)

Emerging from Madinah during the caliphate of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab﵁, his lineage was steeped in the elite sanctuary of early Islam; he was the grandson of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq﵁, the son of Al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam﵁, and the nephew of Aisha bint Abi Bakr﵂ Rather than resting on the vast political and social prestige of his prominent family, ʿUrwah﵀ chose a path of absolute intellectual sacrifice. He spent his youth learning directly from his aunt Aisha﵂ and his brother Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr﵀, recording and memorising thousands of prophetic traditions to become one of the celebrated Seven Jurists of Madinah who governed the holy city's early legal landscape.

He maintained an uncompromising stand for academic integrity during an era of intense political fitnah, navigating complex relations with Umayyad caliphs like Abdul Malik ibn Marwan and Al-Walid I. When factional wars threatened the sanctuary of Madinah, ʿUrwah﵀ courageously refused to co-opt his vast legal authority or prophetic transmissions to legitimize political violence. When his collection of legal scrolls was tragically burned during a period of civil destruction, he immediately returned to his study to reconstruct the chains of truth from memory. This unyielding stance was balanced by astounding patience under severe personal tragedy. While visiting the Umayyad court in Damascus, ʿUrwah﵀ suffered a fast-spreading leg infection requiring immediate amputation. Refusing sedatives, he entered a state of deep prayer while surgeons removed the limb. On the exact same day, his son was killed by a runaway horse. ʿUrwah﵀ miraculously overcame this double grief, famously looking at his remaining leg and stating that he was deeply thankful to Allah for leaving him with more limbs than He had taken away.

His multi-disciplinary genius laid the blueprint for all future Islamic scholarship, establishing historical biography as a rigorous, independent academic discipline. Realizing that the living memories of the Prophet’s military expeditions were at risk of distortion, he single-handedly became the first formal compiler of the Seerah. While his original notebooks were later synthesized into the historical works of Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Saʿd, his direct transmissions remain foundational to early Islamic history.

Today, the UKIA publishing repository honours this pioneer through its edition, Maghazi Rasulillah or ʿUrwah ibn Zubayr’s Campaigns of the Messenger of Allah, meticulously edited by Dr Muhammad Mustafa al-ʿAzami. Restoring the earliest eyewitness memory of the Al-Maghazi material, this volume brings rare primary documents, letters, and participant lists into the public sphere, linking modern Western students straight to the pristine dawn of Madinan jurisprudence.

The scholarly district of Mau, India, was the birthplace of Dr. M. M. Al-ʿAzami﵀, who represents the elite manifestation of modern multidisciplinary genius. His scholarly path was a cross-border pursuit of excellence; he completed his foundational training at the legendary Darul Uloom Deoband, earned his Master’s degree from the historic Al-Azhar University in Egypt, and ultimately completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 1966. Spending decades teaching as a professor at King Saud University in Riyadh, he worked fluidly within both traditional Islamic seminaries and modern Western university systems. Al-ʿAzami entered the academic arena at a time when the historical validity of prophetic traditions was facing unprecedented, systematic scepticism from Western Orientalist critics who dismissed the Hadith corpus as back-projected, unreliable folklore.

Governed by absolute taqwa and a deep consciousness of his responsibility before Allah, Dr. Al-ʿAzami dedicated his career to the modern, systematic dismantling of these assertions using strict historical evidence. Through his landmark Cambridge thesis, published as Studies in Early Hadith Literature, he provided irrefutable empirical proof that the systematic, written recording of Hadith had commenced actively during the very lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions. He located, transcribed, and critically edited ancient manuscripts including his critical editing of ancient manuscripts like Urwah ibn Zubayr’s Campaigns of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, and Al-Muwatta of Imam Malik. Applying a rigorous level of textual criticism that stunned the global academic community, he defeated Western academic biases on their own terms by introducing advanced manuscript criticism and physical document cross-referencing. His latest masterpiece was his comparative work, The History of the Qur’anic Text from Revelation to Compilation. For this unparalleled service to the preservation of the Sunnah, he was awarded the prestigious King Faisal International Prize for Islamic Studies in 1980.

His visionary sacrifices were also borne on the digital frontier. In 1975, when external critics suggested that emerging computer systems would expose structural vulnerabilities in Hadith chains, Dr. Al-Azami famously declared, "All we ask for is a fair treatment of the subject, not a favourable one."
